Australia’s preparations for the Ashes are on track as they took control of the warm-up game against Somerset at the end of the third day in Taunton on Friday.
Having declared at 321/5 on Friday, after taking a one-run lead, James Pattinson (3-61) and Nathan Lyon (3-73) helped dismiss Somerset for 260. The Australians were 36 for no loss at close of play, needing a further 224 for victory on the final day.
Ed Cowan was batting on 14 and Usman Khawaja, who opened the batting in place of Shane Watson, was unbeaten on 18 but it was Pattinson and the bowling unit that were the hero of the day.
Mitchell Starc also claimed two wickets while Peter Siddle and James Faulkner chipped in with one each as Somerset struggled to build a partnership though the day.
James Hildreth top-scored with 75 and Peter Trego made 60, the only batsmen to capitalise on a decent start provided by openers Nick Compton (34) and Marcus Trescothick (32).
